Eneref Institute Reports That Retailers May Forfeit Both Potential Sales and Energy Savings Using Conventional Store Lighting Design
WASHINGTON DC, June 18, 2019 – A new report by Eneref Institute, a leading advocate for sustainable development, documents the correlation between the use of Natural Interior Daylight (NID) and higher sales in big-box retail stores. Evidence suggests that retailers are forfeiting sales opportunities due to reliance on more electric lighting over natural daylight.
The Eneref Report’s key facts:
- Out of 108 outlet stores analyzed, a significant portion would likely have seen as much as 40% higher sales with the addition of skylights.
- To guard future revenue, retailers must attract millennials, who decidedly favor companies that act aggressively to mitigate climate change.
- The pivotal opportunity for increased sales through greater use of Natural Interior Daylight lies in the supermarket sector.
- Retailers with Natural Interior Daylight for store illumination see increased customer traffic.
The report goes on to explain that, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), within the next 10 years, carbon dioxide emissions must plunge to less than half of what they are today to prevent the worst consequences of climate change from occurring as soon as 2040. That’s why utilizing Natural Interior Daylight is so critical: unlike LED electric lighting, daylight uses no energy and produces no carbon emissions.
“By installing skylights, large retailers have a unique opportunity for a triple play: shrink energy costs, boost sales and tackle climate change—all at the same time,” asserts Seth Warren Rose, Founding Director of Eneref Institute.
