Daniel Mazmanian, PhD

Dan Mazmanian is an advisor on the Eneref Report, Above-Code steel frame windows specified for USC Fertitta Hall. The Eneref Report is part of the Code For Climate campaign,

Mazmanian is a widely published scholar in the field of policy implementation and environmental policy. He is a professor at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy and the director of new initiatives at the Center for Sustainable Cities. He served as the school’s Ione L. Piper Dean and Professor from 2000-2005. Before coming to USC, he served as dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation since 1994. Professor Mazmanian served as executive director of the “Report of the California Adaptation Advisory Panel to the State of California,” in 2009-2010, and a member of the “Task Force on Environmental Governance of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development,” in 2005-2006.

Lew Harriman, ME

Lew is an advisor on the Eneref Report; Criteria for Evaluation: Select-Service Hotel Indoor Air Quality.

Lew Harriman focuses on moisture control, humidity and energy in buildings and industrial processes. Lew served as a National Peer in the Construction Excellence Program of the Public Buildings Service of the U.S. General Services Administration. He is well-known as a writer and lecturer in North America, Europe and Asia. He is a Fellow and Life Member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and served for four years as an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer. Lew is the author of The Dehumidification Handbook, and was the lead author for both the ASHRAE Humidity Control Design Guide and The ASHRAE Guide for Buildings in Hot & Humid Climates. He also wrote the California Guide to Best Practices for Home Energy Retrofits and served as the Chair of ASHRAE’s Multidisciplinary Task Group on Damp Buildings, Human Health and HVAC Design. He has served as Chair and Vice Chair and handbook Subcommittee Chair of ASHRAE’s Technical Committee 1.12 – Moisture Management in Buildings, and earlier served on Technical Committee 8.12 – Desiccant Dehumidification Equipment and Components.

James Benya, PE, FIES, FIALD

James Benya is an advisor on the Eneref Report, Natural Daylight In Big-Box Retail Stores Boosts Consumer Sales. The Eneref Report is part of the Right To Daylight campaign. 

James Benya is a professional lighting designer, educator and consultant with 40 years of experience. He is a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer,Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (FIES), and Fellow of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD). A member of the legendary Smith Hinchman & Grylls Lighting Group, he established and led California’s seminal lighting design firm Luminæ Souter Lighting Design as Principal and CEO before starting Benya Lighting Design in 1994 in Portland, Oregon. His design work has been published in every major lighting design and architectural journal, including Architecture, Architectural Record, Architectural Lighting, Progressive Architecture, LD&A, Lighting Dimensions, Interiors, Interior Design, Designers West, Northern California Home and Garden, Architectural Digest, and Building Design and Construction. He has won numerous lighting design awards, including a two time recipient of the EDISON AWARD, the Edison Award of Excellence (7 times), the Edison Award for Environmental Design (thrice), the International Illumination Design Award of Excellence, and the Source Awards First Place Award.

Bob Murrin, FAIA

Bob Murrin is a principal at AC Martin and of the Higher Education Design and Planning Studio, responsible for major Architectural Design commissions at Colleges and Universities, Community Colleges and K-12. AC Martin is a California based architecture, planning, interior architecture and research firm that uses an integrated design approach to create enduring environments for the 21st century.

Edward Dean, FAIA

As part of the Right To Daylight campaign, Edward Dean is an advisor on the Eneref Report; Architects Choose Modular Glass Skylights for Cornell University.

Dean’s objective is to help move the profession toward the next generation of building infrastructure–zero net energy and zero carbon buildings. A combination of building scientist, design coach and experienced large-project architect, Edward Dean has specialized in low-energy sustainable building design throughout his professional career. He has both designed and consulted on zero-net-energy building projects. His experience in professional practice as project leader on major projects at nationally recognized firms gives him a realistic understanding of the building industry, its limitations and possibilities.

Deborah Burnett, ASID CMG AASM

Deborah Burnett is an advisor on the Eneref Report, As A Standard Feature In Builder Home Designs, Skylights Increase ROI. The Eneref Report is part of the Right To Daylight campaign. 

Burnett is a recognized international authority in epigenetic design and circadian correct spaces with an emphasis on passive wellness. Deborah consults and provides peer review specifications for projects with a high expectation for occupant health and well being, including enhanced sleep efficacy and reduced daytime fatigue.  Also an award winning interior designer and general contractor, Deborah  is especially known for practical, innovative and attractive solutions.

Clanton has won numerous awards in energy efficiency and is currently the CEO at Clanton & Associates, Inc. Since 1981, Clanton & Associates has been integrating daylight and electric light to enhance the built environment.

Fawzia Koofi

Fawzia is a Senior Fellow for the Lead The Leap campaign. Fawzia Koofi is an award-winning peace activist, Member of Afghanistan Parliament and Vice President of the National Assembly. Koofi began her political career promoting the right to education of girls in her “Back to School” campaign. In Parliament, she has focused primarily on women’s rights, but she also has legislated for the building of roads to connect remote villages to educational and health facilities. Fawzia Koofi’s memoir, The Favored Daughter: One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future, is an autobiographical memoir written by Fawzia Koofi with the aid of Nadene Ghouri.

Ralph Thompson, LEED AP, PE

Ralph Thompson is a Senior Fellow for the COOL ROOM, COOL EARTH campaign. President and CEO of Holocene Clean Energy with 40+ years’ experience in domestic and international construction, Ralph Thompson can confidently organize a construction project of any scale in any location. It’s that level of expertise with which he has managed over $3 billion in project value in Industrial, Manufacturing, Energy, Commercial, DoD and Federal installations. Ralph also managed the first LEED Platinum project certified in North Carolina. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction from NC State University. He is certified LEED AP and licensed as a professional engineer in North Carolina. He recently completed the first Living Building Challenge Net Zero Energy public library in the nation and is considered an expert in Zero Net Energy design and implementation. Eric is the Director of the Right To Daylight campaign.

Eric Huffman, LEED is the Principal Owner of Daylighting Solutions based in Rohrersville, Maryland. Since 1996 Daylighting Solutions has served thousands of customers, saving them millions of dollars, by eliminating the need for artificial lighting during the day.

Shelley James, PhD

Shelley James is an advisor on the Eneref Report, Operable Skylights in Sunrooms Lower Energy Load, Boost Air Quality. The Eneref Report is part of the Right To Daylight campaign.

Dr Shelley James is an international expert on light and well-being, founder of Age of Light Innovations, TedX and keynote speaker, WELL Advisor and Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art. She is also a trained glass artist and electrician. Light is as important to the healthy function of every cell in your body as food, water and air. Shelley is on a mission to inspire others to harness the power of the humble lightbulb to be healthier, happier and save the planet too.
